In Eastern France, the ENACT project carried out by the Université de Lorraine and the Université de Strasbourg wins the call for artificial intelligence (AI) Cluster of France 2030.
The ENACT artificial intelligence project, winner of a France 2030 call for proposals
In May 2024, Emmanuel Macron announced the winners of the programme “AI Cluster: world-class research and training centres in artificial intelligence”. Among them, the European Centre for Artificial Intelligence through Innovation (ENACT). The key is support of 67 million euros from the State over 5 years, including 30 million euros from France 2030. To this is added one million euros per year from the Grand Est Region (Eastern France).
ENACT is a consortium of Eastern France bringing together actors from the academic world, public institutions including the Grand Est Region, and private companies. It focuses on strategic areas such as automatic language processing, AI for engineering and scientific discovery, and digital health.
Eastern France, the future European leader of AI?
With this national and regional support, ENACT aims to position Eastern France as a European leader in artificial intelligence. The project aims to attract the best talent in artificial intelligence and to develop this technology more widely in France. To this end, ENACT will fund 18 Research and Innovation Chairs as well as an International Chairs Programme.
At the same time, the project will strengthen the internationalisation of the recruitment of researchers and teacher-researchers. It will also increase the number of PhD students in AI to reach 150 theses per year by 2030.
Responding to and anticipating business AI needs
Strengthening research and training will serve the economy of Eastern France. Therefore, ENACT will take into account the needs of businesses. It should facilitate access to industrial and medical data and link AI skills.
The project also meets the need for qualified technicians and engineers in all sectors of activity. ENACT aims to double the number of students trained in artificial intelligence, with the creation of new courses taught in English.
