UMIAMI launches its industrial plant protein production in Eastern France

The young French company UMIAMI has chosen Alsace as the location for its plant producing plant protein as an alternative to meat. It is taking over the former Knorr building to develop an industrial activity that will eventually create up to 200 jobs.

Current production of 7,500 tonnes of plant-based meat and fish substitutes, which can be increased to 20,000 tonnes. This is the stated capacity of UMIAMI’s plant in Duppigheim (Alsace), officially inaugurated on March 18. Production started at the end of 2023, and 53 people currently work there. The plant will continue to expand with two additional production lines and an industrial R&D line.

The growing market for plant-based alternatives to meat

UMIAMI is a French foodtech company founded in 2020. Its mission is to help reduce meat consumption worldwide, to limit its impact on health, animals and the environment. After several years of research and development, UMIAMI has developed a 100% plant-based product that mimics meat in every way (taste, texture, color, juiciness…). Thanks to the “umization” process, it is now possible to produce, on an industrial scale, plant parts with fibers that resemble meat.

Choosing Eastern France to industrialize production

The company chose the former Knorr industrial site in Duppigheim to industrialize its production because of its location in the heart of Europe. The site is close to UMIAMI’s customers and main sources of raw materials, know-how and industrial culture.

The project was strongly supported by the French government as part of the France 2030 program, and by the Grand Est region (Eastern France). Ultimately, the plant will employ 200 people and produce up to 20,000 tonnes of plant-based alternatives to meat and fish.
