Strasbourg-based startup Blackleaf has raised €7 million to decarbonize the industry using graphene.

After ten years of research and a €7 million fundraising, Blackleaf is preparing to launch its liquid graphene production on an industrial scale in early 2025. For its development, the Strasbourg start-up chose Eastern France.

Blackleaf aims to revolutionize graphene production. Graphene is a key material in energy storage and more broadly for the decarbonisation of industry. In order to realise its production on an industrial scale, the company is preparing to develop an industrial pilot to produce 120 tonnes of responsible graphene in Alsace (Eastern France) by 2025.

Accompanied by our colleagues from Scal’E-Nov, the accelerator of start-up in Eastern France, Blackleaf has just raised 7 million euros. Among the investors are Team Cajuba, which brings together some fifty business angels from Eastern France, as well as Armor Group from Nantes.

… to produce a sustainable graphene…

Our objective is both to establish a real industrial production capacity and, at the same time, to develop solutions and products using graphene,” says Yannick Lafue, Blackleaf’s CEO.

The Strasbourg-based start-up has already developed a graphene coating process on all types of materials. In 2024, Blackleaf hopes to continue the development of conductive inks and heating coatings. At the same time, it is preparing to expand its business to include low-carbon concrete and the integration of graphene into the manufacture of energy storage systems.

All the solutions developed by Blackleaf incorporate a sustainable dimension. Indeed, the company has patented its eco-friendly process to produce a few-layer graphene (FLG). It is intended to be cheaper, faster and more environmentally friendly than any other process.

… in order to decarbonize industry.

Blackleaf’s technology ensures an affordable shot of this material for many industrial sectors. Among the sectors concerned are aerospace, oil and gas, chemicals and the automotive industry.

Aware of these issues, Hubert de Boisredon, CEO of Armor Groupe, who helped raise funds, said: “There are real industrial synergies between our two companies. Graphene is a key material for our battery collectors business as well as our brand new smart film subsidiary ARMOR SMART FILMS.
