American group O-I Glass invests €95 million in decarbonisation of its sites in Eastern France
O-I Glass Inc., a global player in glass packaging, announces a new record investment of €95 million for the decarbonisation and modernisation of two industrial glass packaging production sites in Eastern France.
Massive investment of O-Glass for the decarbonisation of its glassworks in Reims (Marne) and Gironcourt-sur-Vraine (Vosges)
In its press release, the American company explains that this investment “will make it possible to achieve the ecological and energy transition of the plant while modernizing and sustaining the industrial tool and improving working conditions.”
In Reims, O-I Glass will invest 40 million euros for the decarbonisation of its production line. A huge furnace needs to be completely refurbished and additional technologies are planned to save energy. The company plans to reduce its energy requirements and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 5%.
In the Vosges, in Gironcourt-sur-Vraine, the €55 million envelope includes the reconstruction of a furnace with the so-called Gas Oxy Advanced Technology (GOAT) technology. This technology is designed to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In addition to existing technologies at the site, the new facility is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 18%.
Becoming a global benchmark for the group in terms of decarbonisation
In terms of sustainable development, several actions have already been implemented in the two glassworks in Eastern France. In Reims, 90% of the glass is recycled locally and some of the fatal heat produced is reused by the city to heat some homes. In Gironcourt-sur-Vraine, almost 80% of the raw materials at the plant are locally recycled waste and glass.
The two O-I Glass Group sites in Eastern France had already benefited from massive investments in 2019. 120 million euros had already been invested in Gironcourt-sur-Vraine. As for the Rémise glassworks, it had benefited from an investment of 50 million, allowing the creation of several dozen jobs. The objective: to produce more, and better.
The Remise plant, which will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2024, aims to become a “global reference for the Group’s overall sustainable development strategy”.
